“When the streetlights come on” – Museum Night at the Warsaw Gasworks

Join us on 16 May for a unique evening, when the Warsaw Gasworks will be bathed in historic light. From 6 pm to midnight, we’ll open our doors to you and transport you back to a time when the streets of Warsaw were lit by the soft glow of gas lamps.

On this one night of the year, the ‘City on Gas’ exhibition will see historic gas lamps lit – exactly as they burned on the streets of Warsaw in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the old capital and see how gas forever changed the lives of its inhabitants.

What’s on the programme?

Guided tour (18:00–23:00) – a walk through the exhibition showcasing over a century of the history of gas lighting in Warsaw, this time by the light of real gas lamps.

Workshops for children: “Light sources of the 21st century – the LED” (6.00 pm–10.00 pm) – engaging activities during which children will learn about the evolution of artificial light: from the gas flame to the modern LED. Participants will discover how LEDs work, how to control the colour and brightness of light, and how to build a simple lighting control system.

Science busking by Heweliuszy Nauki (18:00–23:00) – you won’t be bored for a moment whilst queuing for the museum! Educators from Heweliusza Nauki will present spectacular science shows outside the entrance: short experiments in physics and chemistry that will prove that science is all around us.
