Exhibit of the Month – August 2026. High pressure? – One atmosphere!

‘High pressure’ a hundred years ago? One atmosphere! That’s as much as nine times less than a standard coffee machine produces today.

August at the Warsaw Gasworks Museum is dedicated to the machine that solved a fundamental problem for the gasworks: gas left the tanks under a pressure of a fraction of an atmosphere – too low for long-distance transport (to the right bank of the Vistula or to towns on the outskirts of Warsaw). Compressors raised this pressure to one atmosphere, which enabled the gas to be transported across the river and to towns on the outskirts of the capital. To put this into perspective: today, such a value falls within the ‘medium’ pressure range, whilst the high-pressure network starts at around 16 atmospheres.
