From the campfire to the light bulb – the history of light

Have you ever wondered how people coped with the dark before electricity was invented? In this workshop, we’ll embark on a fascinating journey through the history of light – from the first campfires, through oil, kerosene and gas lamps, right up to modern lighting technologies. During the session, participants will not only learn about old ways of lighting the world, but will also create their own lanterns from jars, giving everyday objects a new lease of life. We’ll explore how we can look after the environment through creative activities.

During the workshop we will:

  • learn how a gasworks operated,
  • discover how illuminating gas was produced,
  • see how Warsaw changed when street lamps first lit up,
  • discuss pro-environmental actions and the importance of reusing materials.

This is an excellent opportunity to learn, in an accessible and engaging way, about the importance of light in the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants over a century ago, whilst also discovering how small actions can have a big impact on our planet.

The sessions are led by experienced educators from the Warsaw Gasworks Museum, who share their knowledge and showcase unique museum exhibits.
